Facebook Delays Encrypted Messages Plan On Messenger, Instagram Till 2023

Users Of Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp, Did Not Get The Service For More Than Two Hours

Encrypted messaging is very popular. Several chatting apps are providing encrypted messaging feature. This is attracting more users. While several apps are offering end-to-end encryption, Facebook was yet to implement it. The social media giant started talking about it recently.

The company said that it will soon encrypt users’ messages. It has plans to encrypt messages on Messenger and Instagram. However, the company has now changed the plan. It has announced to delay it. The company is in no mood to encrypt users’ messages before 2023. It said that the delay is due to concerns raised about the safety of users’ data. The company said that it will take time to finish the rollout of end-to-end encryption.

Facebook had said that the end-to-end encryption will be available on Messenger and Instagram by default. Facebook is one of the leading platforms that connect billions of people across the world. The statement said that it is committed to protecting the communications of the users. The company said that it wants to ensure that their data is not compromised. The end-to-end encryption allows two users to read messages.

The sender and the receiver can exchange messages privately. Even the company cannot see messages that are encrypted. Facebook said that it also wants to make sure that the policy to check criminal activity is not compromised with the rollout of end-to-end encryption on Messenger and Instagram.

End-to-end encryption is not new to Facebook. The platform had introduced way back in 2016. It was made available to Messenger. But it works with Secret Conversation feature on Messenger. Users need to use the feature to encrypt their messages on the platform. Facebook had earlier said that end-to-end encryption will be available on Messenger and Instagram by default. It had set 2022.

The decision was believed to be taken following criticism the company faced for years. Meanwhile, the company is also considering unifying its entire infrastructure supporting chatting platforms Messenger, Instagram Direct, and WhatsApp.
