After weeks of waiting the FIFA U-17 World Cup 2017 finally kicked off in the capital on Friday. India started its campaign with a disappointing loss to the USA. The team could manage only a few breaks into the US half while USA team looked in full control of the match. The game was marred by poor management issues by the Organizing Committee. Even the presence of PM Modi could not turn the fortunes of the Indian team which came up way short against the United States. Indian team was completely outclassed by the US team.
The Indian team could make some impact only in the late second half probably when the US team got tired. The gap in the game plan and quality was clearly evident throughout the match. Indian team came to the ground with a 4-5-1 game plan. This defensive approach was no match against the more attacking 4-3-3 formation of the USA. For 46,351 in attendance, it was a disappointing evening as coach Luis Norton de Matos men failed to keep the ball for too long. The Indian midfield was caught unaware every time they had the possession. Indian team committed fouls and gave the unnecessary ball. The passing was nowhere near to clinical as compared to the USA. The US looked a bit relaxed in the first half but soon changed gears and took advantage of Indian mistakes.
The Indian team looked unprepared for the opening game. It looked as if the Indians had opening day nerves. The team is looking to turn fortunes in the match against Colombia on Monday. The fans are still hoping for the best and look to turn the tables against Colombia. Until then fans can look forward to the likes of Brazil and Nigeria creating some magic in the tournament.
