Health Experts Claim Bleeding Gums Might Be A Sign Of Vitamin C Deficiency

Experts from the American Dental Association have revealed that bleeding gums might be a symptom of gingivitis, which is an early stage of periodontal disease. They have advised that people who are dealing with bleeding gums need to brush their teeth twice a day. Scientists from the University of Washington (UW) have said that deficiency of vitamin C might be a possible reason behind bleeding gums. People suffering from this condition should immediately consult their dentists, said the experts. The new study has been led by Philippe Hujoel, who is a practicing dentist and a lecturer of oral health science at the UW School of Dentistry. Experts have looked at 15 studies of clinical trials in six nations. These clinical trials have enrolled 1140 healthy volunteers and the data of 8210 people who have participated in a health and nutrition survey conducted by the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The findings of these clinical trials have shown that bleeding in the gums and retinal hemorrhaging is linked with low levels of vitamin C in the bloodstream. Experts have said that these bleeding issues can be reversed by increasing the daily intake of vitamin C. The lead author of the study has said that bleeding gums and retinal hemorrhaging might be a sign of a common issue in the microvascular system and a microvascular hemorrhaging trend in the brain, heart, and kidneys.

Philippe Hujoel has said that the findings of the study do not show that reversing these bleeding issues with increased intake of vitamin C will halt the onset of stroke or other severe health issues. Experts have said that vitamin C recommendations have been made to prevent scurvy, which is a fatal disease. Scurvy is caused by severely low levels of vitamin C, which can result in bleeding tendency. Experts have said that scurvy cannot be treated with dental floss.

The authors of the study have said that people should be vigilant about their vitamin C intake and should include non-processed foods such as kale, kiwis, or peppers in their diet. They have said that in case people do not find edible foods rich in vitamin C, they can take 100 to 200 milligrams of vitamin C supplement a day. The study has noted that people who consume lean meats and avoid vitamin C rich organ meats might be at a higher risk of vitamin C deficiency.

The study has reported that retinal hemorrhaging and cerebral strokes are linked with a higher risk of gingival bleeding tendency. The findings of the study have shown that supplements of vitamin C might be able to reverse the issue of retinal bleeding, which is linked with low levels of vitamin C in the bloodstream. Experts have claimed that a link between bleeding gums and low levels of vitamin C can lead to severe health conditions. The authors of the report have warned that a default prescription of oral hygiene and periodontal interventions to cure microvascular conditions can be risky even if it is effective in reversing gingival bleeding. They have said that it does not address any condition and mortality linked to systemic microvascular ailments.
