Elon Musk’s Neuroscience Start-Up Succeeds in Brain Implantation


Neuralink, the Neuroscience start-up has been successful in planting a computer chip in a pig’s brain. The computer chip works as an implant which helps to detect the neural activity inside the animal’s brain. Elon Musk offered insights into the progress made by his team on Dorothy & Gertrude (name of pigs). Neuralink had previously introduced N1, a small chip with tiny, flexible threads that could be implanted in the human brain tissues. N1 chip could be used to monitor the brain’s electrical signals on which many scientists and organizations have been working on this Brain Computer-Interface model for a long time.

Being able to detect and monitor electrical signals of the brain could prove useful in the treatment of paralyzed body parts as well as conditions like depression and chronic pain. Using these devices, the electrical signals travelling from neurons to the brain could be controlled and put in the right way, thus preventing the breaking down of these signals. Elon Musk aims to cut down the bulkiness, low bandwidth devices as well as tethering mediums in Brain Computer-Interface models. Complicated surgeries are also needed to implant these devices. Neuralink is putting in efforts to reduce the complexity of implant surgeries and follow a simple procedure to gain more excellent information about brain activity.

Amongst the two pigs, Gertrude was displayed to show how the brain Computer-Interface tracks neural activities. In contrast, Dorothy was used to demonstrating how easily the implant could be removed, just in case if the person didn’t want it or opted for an upgrade. Gertrude had been implanted for almost two months. Neuralink displayed the neural activities of Gertrude’s brain while it was roaming around in its open looking for food. Providing with successful outcomes, Elon Musk is looking forward to its first human implantation, under Neuralink. Elon believes that these developments in AI (artificial intelligence) could help humans in the long run.
